Maritime Pine Bark : Improved Cognitive Function

Maritime Pine Bark : Improved Cognitive Function

Where It Comes From

Maritime Pine Bark Extract is obtained from the bark of the maritime pine tree (Pinus pinaster), which is native to the Mediterranean region, namely the southwest coast of France. The extract contains a class of antioxidant chemicals known as proanthocyanidins, which are known to protect cells from oxidative stress and enhance blood flow. This extract is widely sold under the brand name Pycnogenol®, but similar extracts can be found under a variety of names.

What It is Indicated For

People largely utilize Maritime Pine Bark Extract for its antioxidant effects, which promote brain health, cognitive ability, and blood circulation. Researchers have investigated its anti-inflammatory properties and its potential to enhance memory and concentration, especially in individuals experiencing cognitive decline.

Key Benefits:

  • Antioxidant Support: Maritime Pine Bark Extract is a powerful antioxidant that protects brain cells from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. A study published in Free Radical Biology and Medicine discovered that Pycnogenol® (a standardized version of Maritime Pine Bark Extract) dramatically lowered oxidative stress in healthy people.
  • Improved Blood Flow: Studies have demonstrated that this extract enhances blood circulation, particularly cerebral blood flow, thereby enhancing cognitive performance and mental clarity. A study published in Clinical Hemorheology and Microcirculation found that Maritime Pine Bark Extract improved cognitive function and memory in the elderly by improving microcirculation in the brain.
  • Cognitive function: Maritime Pine Bark Extract has been demonstrated to improve memory, attention, and overall cognitive function, especially in people with age-related cognitive decline. Research in The Journal of Neuroscience found that Pycnogenol® supplementation improved cognitive function and memory in older people.

Contraindications

Most people generally consider Maritime Pine Bark Extract safe, but those with autoimmune diseases or immunosuppressive medicines should use it with caution as it may stimulate the immune system. Furthermore, anyone with bleeding disorders or who is using blood thinners should consult a doctor before using this extract, since it may increase the risk of bleeding.

Warnings

Most people tolerate Maritime Pine Bark Extract well; however, some may develop mild side effects such as dizziness, gastrointestinal discomfort, or headaches. It is critical to follow the prescribed dosage on the product label and consult with a healthcare expert if you have any concerns or pre-existing medical conditions.

Dosages

Standardized to contain 65-75% proanthocyanidins, the normal daily dosage of Maritime Pine Bark Extract is 50 to 150 mg. Clinical studies have used doses within this range to achieve cognitive benefits and improve blood circulation without significant side effects. For best effects, take the extract consistently over several weeks.
